Dr. Jibril Mustapha, President of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation and former President of the Buhari Youth Organisation, has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos, Mustapha emphasized the importance of unity and strong leadership in addressing Nigeria’s current challenges. He urged Jonathan to respond to growing calls for his return to office.
“As the 2027 elections approach, it is crucial for stakeholders to rally behind a candidate who can truly represent the interests of all Nigerians,” he said. “We believe former President Goodluck Jonathan is that leader—someone who can unify the nation and lead us towards a more promising future.”
Mustapha highlighted the pressing issues facing the country, including economic hardship, widespread insecurity, unemployment, and banditry. He stressed the need for a leader who exemplifies integrity, inclusiveness, and a genuine commitment to national unity.
“Nigeria is at a turning point. Our country is facing serious threats to its stability and growth. We need a leader capable of bringing Nigerians together, irrespective of background or ethnicity,” he added.
He praised Jonathan’s past leadership, noting that his administration was marked by a strong adherence to democratic principles and a focus on the welfare of citizens. Mustapha expressed confidence in Jonathan’s ability to guide Nigeria forward.
“Jonathan’s leadership style promotes inclusiveness and economic development—qualities that are urgently needed at this moment in our history,” Mustapha said. “With him at the helm, we can work toward reclaiming Nigeria’s place both globally and domestically.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Buhari Youth Organisation is a youth-driven group that supported former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Jonathan, who lost his re-election bid to Buhari in 2015, has previously been at the center of legal debates regarding his eligibility to run again. In 2022, a Federal High Court in Bayelsa ruled in his favor, affirming his right to contest future presidential elections.
Presiding Judge Justice Isa Dashen ruled that Jonathan’s initial assumption of office in 2010 did not count as a full presidential term, as he was not elected in the 2007 general election which brought in the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. As such, Section 137 of the constitution could not be applied retroactively to disqualify him.
