At least 26 tourists were killed and dozens more injured after four gunmen opened fire at a resort area in Kashmir, Indian police confirmed. The mass shooting, which took place in the Baisaran meadow near the scenic town of Pahalgam, has been described by authorities as a terror attack carried out by militants opposed to Indian rule in the region.
“This is the worst civilian attack we’ve seen in years,” said Omar Abdullah, the region’s political leader, on social media.
Witnesses reported chaos as the attackers shot at close range. “My husband was shot in the head!” a woman screamed in the aftermath, according to the Times of India.
Most of the victims were Indian nationals visiting the area, often dubbed the “Switzerland of India” for its natural beauty. The gunmen fled the scene, and no group has yet claimed responsibility. A nationwide manhunt is now underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on social media, offering condolences and promising swift justice. “Those behind this heinous act will not be spared. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable,” he said.
India’s Home Affairs Minister, Amit Shah, echoed the sentiment, vowing harsh consequences for the attackers.
The incident occurred during a visit to India by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who called the shooting “a devastating terrorist attack.” He expressed sympathy for the victims and admiration for the resilience of the Indian people.
