Suspected herdsmen attacked Farin Dutse, a community in Nasarawa Local Government Area, on March 10, 2025, killing six people and injuring three others. The attackers also set fire to several houses, leaving many residents homeless. According to a local resident named Zaka, the violence began on Sunday, March 9, over a dispute about a mango tree being cut down by a Fulani herdsman for his cows. After a heated argument, the herder fatally stabbed one person. The next morning, the herder retaliated by leading an attack on the community while residents were still asleep.
In the aftermath, angry residents burned down the herder’s huts. The police confirmed the deaths and injuries, with one pregnant woman, Azumi Allah Gaba, dying when a mob set fire to a nearby settlement. The police intervened, rescuing a victim from the mob and managing to control the situation. However, the mob also destroyed police vehicles and set fire to the suspect’s settlement, leading to more casualties.
Efforts to restore peace included a meeting between community leaders. Two suspects have been arrested, and a police and military presence has been deployed to patrol the area. The police are committed to ensuring the safety of residents and continuing efforts to apprehend all those responsible for the violence.
