Danielle Collins, Retiring Tennis Star, Skips Ceremony After Early Exit in US Open First Round

American tennis star, Danielle Collins wasted no time disappearing from the spotlight after bombing out of her final US Open campaign on Wednesday morning (AEST).

According to 7 New, the 30-year-old 2022 Australian Open finalist announced her retirement ahead of her home grand slam at Flushing Meadows, giving American fans one last chance to get behind her.

Her fairytale farewell didn’t last long though, crashing out to countrywoman Caroline Dolehide in the first round, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

But if the crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium thought they’d a ceremony, speech, or even lap of honour to wave goodbye to the veteran star, they were very mistaken.

So keen to get off the court without any fanfare, Collins didn’t even take the bouquet of flowers that former WTA CEO Stacey Allaster had ready for her.

“There was surely a ceremony ready for Danielle Collins but she was so fast leaving the court that Stacey Allaster couldn’t even give her the flowers,” tennis journalist Jose Morgado said.

Asked about the swift exit in her post-match press conference, Collins said she had no interest in hanging around to smell the roses — both figuratively and literally.
