Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of distorting the facts and attempting to embarrass Nigeria by alleging that the Senate suspended her due to her sexual harassment accusations against him. Akpoti-Uduaghan made the claims at the United Nations Inter-parliamentary conference in New York on Tuesday, March 12.
During the Senate plenary on Thursday, March 13, Akpabio criticized the Kogi senator for trying to “embarrass the upper chamber by presenting a misleading narrative to the international community.”
“I am aware that she misrepresented the facts and globalized the issue, causing embarrassment to the Senate by providing a false narrative. I appreciate Hon. Kafilat for clarifying to the international media that the story presented was far from the truth,” Akpabio said.
He added, “She brought the issue before the Senate through a petition but refused to let us investigate it. Instead, she took the matter to court and then to the international community. Actions like this could discourage the appointment of women to key political positions.”
After receiving a vote of confidence from his colleagues, Akpabio urged senators to remain focused on their legislative duties and avoid distractions that could hinder the Senate’s work.
“I thank you for this vote of confidence. Let’s stay focused and avoid unnecessary distractions,” he concluded.
