Two Chinese nationals and a police officer were killed in an ambush by gunmen who attacked their convoy in Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA, Abia, on the evening of Friday, April 5.
Maureen Chinaka, the spokesperson for the police command, confirmed the incident, stating that the victims were on their way to a company site in Agukwu-Amaya, Ndundu community, when they were attacked.
“The manager, Mr. Quan, his colleague Mr. Cai, and Inspector Audu Saidu, one of the escort officers, were killed in the attack. The assailants also took Inspector Saidu’s rifle,” Chinaka said.
A distress call was immediately received, leading to a coordinated response from the police, military, and other security agencies.
“Following the alert, officers from the Abia State Command, in collaboration with the military and other agencies, launched a search operation. As a result, three Chinese nationals were rescued unharmed, while one sustained injuries. Inspector Uba Ahmed, who was also rescued, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg,” she added.
The police spokesperson explained that both the injured expatriate and police officer were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) for treatment.
On Saturday, a tactical team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) visited the crime scene. Chinaka further stated that through a joint effort involving the police, military, and local community members, Inspector Ijeagwa Friday was rescued unharmed.
The investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to locate the attackers and bring them to justice.
