Pope Francis made a surprise appearance on Sunday, mingling with crowds at the Vatican just two weeks after being discharged from the hospital following a serious bout of pneumonia.

The 88-year-old pope, who was wheeled through Saint Peter’s Square in a wheelchair after a mass for the sick, greeted the crowd, saying, “A good Sunday to all. Thank you very much.” Despite his frail voice and nasal breathing tubes, his presence was a sign of his improving health. His last public appearance was on February 14, and doctors had advised him to rest for two months after his hospital stay.

Though still undergoing recovery, Pope Francis blessed the crowd on Sunday, providing a hopeful sign for his health ahead of Easter. However, his doctors had recommended he avoid such public gatherings to prevent the risk of infection. A Vatican source confirmed his improvement, stating he wasn’t yet well enough to deliver a full message but was strong enough for this symbolic gesture.

During his time in the hospital, Pope Francis’s condition had been critical, and he was reportedly close to death on two occasions. His health issues have led to speculation about his future role as pope, with comparisons to his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013 due to health concerns.

Before his public appearance, Pope Francis received the sacrament in St. Peter’s Cathedral. He also shared a written prayer for healthcare workers and for the end of global conflicts, mentioning regions such as Ukraine, Sudan, and Gaza. In his message, he called for peace, especially in Gaza, urging an end to violence and the return of hostages held by Hamas.

While Pope Francis continues his recovery with support from healthcare workers, he has resumed some papal duties, including editing documents. However, he has reduced his schedule significantly, and his participation in Easter services remains uncertain.
