The football world is mourning the loss of former Colombia international Jorge Bolano, who passed away at the age of 47.

Bolano’s death was confirmed on Sunday, April 6, by local media in the city of Cúcuta, Colombia. According to Bogota’s El Tiempo newspaper, the former Parma, Modena, Lecce, and Sampdoria midfielder suffered a heart attack while attending a relative’s birthday party. He was quickly taken to a nearby clinic but tragically passed away.

The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) released a statement expressing their sorrow: “With deep sadness, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Jorge Eladio Bolano Correa, former Colombian National Team player, coach, and professional footballer, who passed away on Sunday, April 6, in Cúcuta. Bolano’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew and admired him. His legacy as a footballer and coach will forever be remembered in Colombian sports. The FCF, alongside the Executive Committee, led by President Ramon Jesurun, offers prayers for his eternal rest and strength to his family during this difficult time.”

Bolano earned 36 caps for Colombia and was part of their 1998 World Cup squad, although much of his career was spent playing in Italy. He spent eight years at Parma, including two loan spells at Sampdoria and Lecce, and helped the club win the 2002 Coppa Italia, their last major trophy.

His former teammate Gianluigi Buffon paid tribute to him, calling him an “unforgettable friend and teammate.” Buffon said, “Jorge was an unforgettable friend and teammate, a constant in a locker room full of extraordinary champions. We played and won together during the golden years at Parma. On the field, he gave everything, and off the field, I will always remember his kindness and humanity, which made him a role model for everyone. We will always carry you with us. Rest in peace, my friend.”

Parma also honored their former player on social media, stating, “Today, Parma Calcio extends its condolences to the family of Jorge Bolano, who has passed away at 47, leaving an irreplaceable void. Goodbye, Jorge. Forever Gialloblu.”
