The Cross River State Government has strongly condemned the recent attempted theft and vandalism of public transformers in Obudu, calling the act “reprehensible” and a direct assault on resources intended for the benefit of all citizens.
This was revealed in a statement issued by Gilbert Agbor, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Asset Management and Recovery, and made available to the press on Thursday in Calabar.
Governor Bassey Otu expressed his disappointment over the incident and urged all Cross Riverians to remain vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity involving public assets to the Department of Asset Management and Recovery at the Governor’s Office.
The statement read, “The government is deeply concerned about the ongoing abuse and illegal diversion of public assets by dishonest individuals, despite repeated warnings and public notices. The latest attempt to steal public transformers was thwarted thanks to the vigilance of concerned residents in Obudu and the prompt intervention of the Nigeria Police Force. This swift response not only prevented the theft but also highlighted the importance of community cooperation in protecting government infrastructure.
“Let it be clear: anyone found responsible, regardless of their position, will face the full force of the law.”
Governor Otu emphasized that such acts of sabotage undermine the state’s progress and prosperity. He called on citizens to unite in safeguarding public investments meant to improve communities and the lives of residents. He also directed the Department of Asset Management and Recovery to collaborate with security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the criminal act.
