Governors elected under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have dismissed rumors of a potential party merger ahead of the 2027 general elections. They also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, particularly in Borno, Katsina, and Edo States.
At a meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, issued a communiqué stating, “The Forum has resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger.” However, the PDP is open to welcoming any parties, individuals, or groups willing to join forces with them in the 2027 elections to achieve good governance.
The communiqué further addressed the recent Supreme Court ruling, recommending that the Deputy Secretary temporarily serve as National Secretary of the party until a permanent nomination from the South East Zone is ratified by INEC.
The Forum also emphasized its commitment to protecting constitutional democracy, particularly regarding the declaration of a state of emergency in any state, and pledged to support Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in his challenges related to the state of emergency declared in his state.
On the security front, the governors condemned the escalating violence in several states, including Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau, and called for a revised national security strategy that empowers state governments to play a stronger role in defense.
Looking ahead, the PDP Governors’ Forum announced plans to hold a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27, 2025, and an early convention in Kano on August 28-30, 2025. The Forum also revealed the formation of a Zoning Committee, headed by Governor Douye Diri, and a National Convention Committee led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
The Forum thanked Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for hosting the meeting.
