The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has ruled that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was illegal and unconstitutional.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro annulled the proceedings and resolutions of January that led to Obasa’s ouster.

Obasa had filed a lawsuit against the Lagos State House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who replaced him as Speaker, challenging the legitimacy of the process that resulted in his removal.

Represented by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, Obasa argued that the decision was made by 36 lawmakers while the Assembly was on recess and he was out of the country. He contended that the session was invalid, as it was convened without his approval or a formal delegation of power, violating the Assembly’s rules.

The suit referenced nine grounds, including provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
