Lagos to Launch Special Number Plates for People with Disabilities

Lagos to unveil special vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out special vehicle number plates to help identify persons with disabilities across the state.

This was revealed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held Tuesday, marking the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

According to Osiyemi, the initiative will be carried out by the Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA), which is also responsible for producing customized number plates. So far, the authority has created 716 fancy motor vehicle plates and 347 fancy motorcycle plates on request.

He added that 224 out-of-series plates were issued to accommodate special requests and unique numbering needs. In addition, the authority replaced 11,152 standard number plates, 212 motorcycle plates, and 63 fancy plates to maintain accurate vehicle identification.

Further production figures include 428 official plates, 1,510 dealer plates, and 4,000 plates for articulated vehicles.

Osiyemi also shared that LSNPPA, in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), is working on new environmentally friendly number plates in line with the state’s “Go Green” initiatives.

Addressing concerns about fading plates, the commissioner assured the public that high-quality materials are used, but emphasized that improper car washing techniques using corrosive substances contribute to wear.

“Just as humans have a lifespan, number plates do too. They should be replaced when necessary,” he noted.
