Chris Hassan, Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State, has expressed confidence that defections in other states will not diminish the party’s strength or credibility in Plateau. He made this statement during a press conference in Jos on Thursday, urging party members to stay calm and steadfast, noting that defections are a common part of political processes.
Hassan’s comments came shortly after the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and all PDP members in the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite these developments, Hassan praised Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his exceptional leadership, highlighting his progress in governance, commitment to justice, and service to the people. He emphasized that Mutfwang’s accomplishments in less than two years reflect the growing trust in the PDP’s leadership.
“We are grateful for the support from our party members and the people of Plateau State,” Hassan said. “Defections are not unusual in politics, but we remain confident that the PDP’s strength and credibility are rooted in the struggles and support of our people. We assure the party leadership that we will continue building on our successes and provide a platform for the aspirations of our citizens.”
The PDP chairman also condemned the recent attacks by Fulani militia in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas, which resulted in deaths over the past two weeks. He praised Governor Mutfwang for his prompt response and the proactive efforts of state security agencies.
“We support the governor’s call for local communities to organize security measures in collaboration with neighboring areas. This approach reflects the leadership’s commitment to the well-being of the people,” Hassan stated.
Hassan further acknowledged the coordinated efforts of the military, which have already made progress in removing the militia from some areas. He called on all Plateau citizens to continue supporting the government, stay vigilant, and remain committed to building a better future for the state under Governor Mutfwang’s leadership.
“The PDP remains the party of the people. Together, we will continue striving for the greater good of Plateau,” Hassan concluded.
