The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the cancellation of centralized May Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states, citing political tensions in both regions. The decision comes in response to the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State and alleged political interference in Edo State’s NLC council.

In a directive issued by the national leadership, all affiliated unions in Rivers State have been instructed to hold their Workers’ Day celebrations exclusively at the state NLC secretariat. Similarly, unions in Edo State are to mark the day independently at their respective union offices.

The NLC’s letters, dated April 22, 2025, were addressed to the NLC chairmen of both states and signed by Deputy General Secretary Ismail Bello.

The NLC expressed opposition to the emergency rule in Rivers State, which involved appointing a sole administrator, and called for the restoration of the elected government. In Edo State, the NLC has been in conflict with the state government over alleged interference in the state council’s affairs, including the creation of factions within the organization.

In the letter to Rivers State NLC Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, the NLC emphasized the theme for this year’s celebration, “Reclaiming the Civic Space Amid Economic Hardship.” However, due to the political situation in Rivers, the NLC called for a more reflective approach, focusing on advocating for the restoration of democratic governance. The NLC urged the organization of a peaceful rally at the Rivers State NLC secretariat to highlight the demand for democratic rule, better worker welfare, and the people’s desire for freedom.

Similarly, the NLC instructed the Edo State NLC Chairman, Olaye Odion, to ensure that unions in the state make independent arrangements for May Day celebrations, given the ongoing efforts to resolve the leadership crisis in the state council. The NLC reassured that it would continue working towards unity within the state council and urged a peaceful and orderly celebration.

The strained relationship between the Edo State Government and the NLC dates back to disputes over Odion’s leadership following the 2024 gubernatorial election, with accusations that the government was involved in creating divisions within the state council. Despite attempts by the NLC national leadership and the Federal Ministry of Labour to mediate, no resolution has been reached.

The NLC remains committed to addressing these issues and ensuring that its members can celebrate May Day under peaceful and unified conditions.
