The Vatican has unveiled the first images of Pope Francis’s final resting place inside the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, where he was buried on Saturday.
The tomb was opened to the public on Sunday, drawing an overwhelming crowd. According to Italian news agency ANSA, over 13,000 visitors entered the basilica to pay their respects, while thousands more waited outside.
All Rome-based cardinals reportedly visited the tomb later in the afternoon, with many continuing on to the chapel housing the revered image of the Virgin Mary, Salus Populi Romani.
Pope Francis, who passed away last Monday at the age of 88, is the first pope in over 100 years to be buried outside the Vatican and the first in more than three centuries to be laid to rest at St. Mary Major.
