Presidency speaks on linking NIN with ID cards for Nigeria students

The Presidency has called for the integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) with student ID cards to create a more versatile identification system, ensuring better data accuracy for Nigerian students.

Hon. Sunday Asefon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, revealed this during a recent visit to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The goal of the initiative is to register all students across educational levels and link their NIN with their student IDs, providing both digital identification and vital data for policymaking.

Asefon explained that this move will offer students a wide range of benefits, including access to internships, skills training programs, and job opportunities. “Our primary objective is to ensure all students have digital identification, which will support data-driven decisions in the education sector,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of the NIN for preventing identity fraud and securing personal information, with the initiative targeting not just exam registrations but long-term benefits for students’ academic and professional growth.

The NIMC Director General expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that NIMC is already working to boost awareness across campuses. The partnership with the Ministry of Youth Development and Ministry of Education is set to further strengthen the initiative.

This move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader vision to improve educational and developmental opportunities for Nigerian youth through timely and impactful initiatives.
