Hall of Fame basketball star Dwyane Wade has revealed that he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his kidney.
The 43-year-old retired NBA guard shared his health battle on the latest episode of his podcast, The WY Network, on January 30.
Wade disclosed that 13 months ago, doctors removed 40% of his right kidney after a routine checkup led to a shocking discovery. Inspired by his father, Dwyane Wade Sr., who battled prostate cancer, Wade decided to visit the doctor after experiencing stomach pain, cramps, and difficulty urinating.
“I was wondering, ‘Why is my stream so weak? Why is my piss coming out slow?’” Wade recalled on his podcast, speaking with co-host Bob Metelus.
A full-body scan revealed a cyst-like tumor on his kidney. Multiple doctors confirmed he needed surgery, and on December 18, 2023, Wade underwent the procedure. After the removal, tests confirmed the tumor was cancerous.
The three-time NBA champion admitted that the experience changed his perspective on family and vulnerability.
“For the first time, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” Wade said. “That moment was probably the weakest I’ve ever felt in my life.”
He reflected on the difficult decision to proceed with surgery, knowing the risks.
“As a man, you never want your family to see you weak,” Wade shared. “But I had to let go of that.”
Wade, who shares four children with his ex-wife and current wife, actress Gabrielle Union, as well as serving as a legal guardian to his nephew, found strength in his loved ones.
“In the midst of my illness, I saw my family—people who don’t always talk, don’t always agree—come together for me,” he said. “In my weakness, I found strength in them.”
Wade’s candid revelation serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of health, family, and seeking medical attention when something feels off.
