The Central Working Committee of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has directed workers and other concerned citizens to boycott telecom services from MTN, Airtel, and Glo starting 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 13, 2025, in protest against recent tariff hikes.
In a statement issued by NLC President Joe Ajaero and Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, the union demanded an immediate reversal of the tariff increase and insisted that telecom providers revert to previous rates until further negotiations are concluded.
“As a first step in resisting this arbitrary tariff hike, the CWC has directed that beginning Thursday, February 13, 2025, Nigerian workers and other willing citizens boycott MTN, Airtel, and Glo services daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM until the end of February 2025,” the statement read.
The NLC also criticized the government for failing to protect citizens from corporate exploitation and expressed concerns over the impact of the Tax Reform Bills, warning against policies that could further burden Nigerian workers.
If the telecom tariff increase is not reversed by February 29, 2025, the NLC has threatened to escalate the protest into a nationwide telecom shutdown starting March 1, 2025. The union is calling on civil society groups and all Nigerians to join in resisting what it describes as exploitative economic policies.
