Cross River State On High Alert Amid Health Risks, Commissioner Assures Public

The Cross River State government, under the leadership of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, is fully prepared to tackle the outbreak of infectious diseases and prevent their further spread, according to Health Commissioner Ayuk.

Speaking to residents, Ayuk emphasized the need for heightened vigilance, particularly as the early rains increase the risk of diseases like Lassa Fever, cholera, and mpox. He explained that Lassa Fever, caused by the Lassa virus, is transmitted through food or household items contaminated by Mastomys rats, which are common in tropical environments.

The commissioner highlighted that symptoms of Lassa Fever begin with general weakness, fever, headache, sore throat, and muscle pain, potentially progressing to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe cases of uncontrolled bleeding. To prevent infection, he urged residents to maintain clean surroundings, store food in rat-proof containers, avoid contact with rats or their droppings, seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear, and report suspected cases to health authorities.

“The Cross River State Ministry of Health is on high alert and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure swift containment of the situation,” Ayuk assured.
