Gardaí in Cork, Ireland, have arrested a Nigerian man in connection with the death of an 84-year-old Nigerian woman who passed away in hospital after an alleged assault at her home. The woman was admitted to Cork University Hospital on Tuesday after reporting feeling unwell following an incident at her home in Carrigaline on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
Doctors discovered that the woman had suffered a severe brain injury, and she died shortly before 4 pm on Tuesday. The incident began on Sunday when the woman’s daughter was assaulted in the kitchen of their home. After seeking help from a neighbor, she returned to find her elderly mother disoriented. The woman claimed she had been pushed and dragged down the stairs, resulting in injury.
A 38-year-old man, known to both women, was initially taken to hospital under mental health legislation but was later discharged. He was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for questioning in connection with the assault. Gardaí have cordoned off the house and are examining the scene for forensic evidence. A postmortem is expected to be key in determining if the assault contributed to the woman’s death.
