At least 12 passengers lost their lives in a tragic accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck on the Benin-Auchi highway on March 1. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. near the Igueoviobo community, close to an army checkpoint.
Cyril Mathew, the Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the crash, stating that the bus, which had departed from Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and was heading to Benin, collided with an oncoming truck traveling towards Auchi. The entire bus crew perished in the crash, which is believed to have been caused by driver fatigue, as the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Following the impact, the bus was consumed by flames, making it impossible to rescue the victims. The FRSC was able to identify the deceased through the vehicle’s manifest and has since reached out to their families. Meanwhile, the truck driver and his assistant, known as the “Motor Boy,” were unharmed in the incident. Cyril Mathew urged all drivers to be cautious of fatigue during long journeys, advising them to take breaks and rest whenever necessary to avoid such tragic accidents.
