Enugu Women Protest Against Herdsmen Attacks, Demand Government Action

Hundreds of women from Eha-Ohala in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday against the persistent attacks and killings by suspected herdsmen in their communities.

The protesters blocked the Nkalagu-Eha-Amufu-Ikem-Obollo-Afor Federal Highway, calling on the Enugu State government to intervene and provide lasting solutions to the crisis. They accused security agencies of failing to protect them while allowing the attackers to operate freely.

The women shared heartbreaking accounts of rape, physical assault, and mutilation, adding that the ongoing attacks have forced residents to abandon their farms, worsening economic hardship and food insecurity. Reports indicate that at least 150 people have been killed, and 28 farm settlements occupied by herdsmen between 2020 and 2025.

Efforts to reach the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for comments were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the state government has yet to issue an official response to the protest.
