The Edo State government, under the administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo, has commenced the demolition of buildings linked to kidnappers in a statewide crackdown on criminal activities.
The Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Paul Akhere, led security personnel in demolishing structures in Illeh (Esan West LGA) and Uromi (Esan Northeast LGA), stating that the action was carried out in accordance with the law. He emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding residents and warned that any property used as a hideout for criminals would be demolished.
“This house has been used for criminal activities. Kidnapped victims were kept here, and a raid by the Nigeria Police Force led to the recovery of dangerous weapons. According to the new Edo State anti-kidnapping law, any house found to be used for kidnapping will be demolished to serve as a deterrent to others,” Akhere said.
He also urged landlords to properly profile prospective tenants before renting out properties, advising them to verify identities and employment records through police assistance.
The Commander of the Special Task Force, SP Michael Anetor, reiterated that the demolitions align with state law and are part of efforts to curb kidnapping and other crimes. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement.
The operation led to the arrest of Utubor Uchenna and Felix Ebama, members of a seven-man kidnapping gang operating in Edo Central. The suspects confessed that their last operation fetched them N10 million, targeting a victim based on his luxury car.
The Edo State government, in collaboration with security agencies, has intensified efforts to flush out criminal elements, making the state safer and more habitable for all residents.
