Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has mourned the death of Dr. Doyin Okupe, the former presidential spokesman and influential political figure. Okupe, who served as the Director-General of Obi’s presidential campaign, passed away at the age of 72 after battling cancer.

A seasoned political strategist, Okupe was also the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to former President Goodluck Jonathan. He resigned from the LP in 2024, citing ideological differences, and later sparked controversy by endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.

Obi expressed his grief on social media, describing Okupe as a passionate advocate for a better Nigeria. “With great sadness, I received the shocking news of the death of my dear elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe,” Obi wrote. “His passing is a huge loss to not only his family but to all of us. I ask members of the Obedient Movement and others to pray for his soul’s eternal rest and to keep his family in their thoughts during this difficult time.”

Obi also offered condolences to Okupe’s family, wishing them strength in their moment of loss.
