“Drunk Officer Allegedly Kills Young Man In Niger State”

                       

An unidentified police officer, reportedly intoxicated, has shot and killed a young man in the Angwan-Kaje area of Maitumbi, Minna, in Niger State. The victim, identified as Sani, was unarmed and posed no threat when the officer opened fire. The incident is believed to have occurred around 3 a.m. on Monday, March 10, 2025.

Eyewitnesses say that Sani was in the area when the officer, said to be under the influence of alcohol, began firing recklessly. A local tea seller, known as Mai Shayi, was also targeted but managed to escape unharmed. One source described the incident, saying, “The officer shot him unlawfully while he was sleeping. He tried to shoot Mai Shayi, but he ran away. Bullet shells were found at the scene.”

Another source described Sani as a peaceful person with no ties to criminal groups, stating, “He was a good person, not arrogant, and didn’t belong to any ‘Yan daba’ group.”

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the shooting. SP Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the police, said the case was reported, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the matter. “The DPO of Maitumbi has been tasked with identifying the officer involved for further action,” he said.
