Abia State Government Introduces Elevator Requirement for Tall Buildings

Abia govt. warns developers that 3-storey buildings without elevators will no longer be approved

The Abia State government has announced that it will no longer approve the construction of three-story buildings without elevators. The new rule mandates that all buildings with three floors must be equipped with elevators to ensure the safety, habitability, and compliance of structures in the state.

During a training session for the Greater Aba Development Authority’s (GADA) building control unit, Architect Uche Ukeje, the agency’s General Manager, emphasized that strict enforcement of building control measures would help prevent building collapses, protect lives, and promote environmentally friendly construction practices. Ukeje, represented by Mr. Enyinnaya Romanus, Head of the Building Control Unit, also warned that all building projects must be monitored at every stage to ensure they meet required standards.

He added, “Before now, there was no building control in Aba. Now, you must get certain approvals before laying the foundation, and we will inspect your work as it progresses to ensure it aligns with your approved plans. If you don’t comply with the regulations, we will halt your project until you do.”

The government also stressed that any development lacking provisions for elevators, proper drainage, or waste disposal systems would face project delays, and violators would face prosecution.
