Arsenal Football Club has announced the appointment of Andrea Berta as their new Sporting Director. Berta, a highly regarded football executive, joins Arsenal after a successful 12-year tenure at Atlético Madrid, where he was instrumental in building teams that won two La Liga titles (2013/14, 2020/21), the Europa League (2018), and reached two UEFA Champions League finals. His expertise in squad building and recruitment played a crucial role in shaping Diego Simeone’s competitive Atlético side.
Berta’s appointment follows the departure of Arsenal’s former sporting director, Edu Gaspar, in November 2024.
Berta expressed his excitement about the role, saying, “I’m thrilled to be joining Arsenal during such an exciting period for the club. I’ve followed Arsenal’s evolution closely and admire the hard work that has re-established the club as a top force in European football. The club has strong values and a rich history, and I’m eager to contribute to a successful future.”
The appointment reflects Arsenal’s commitment to strengthening their footballing structure under manager Mikel Arteta. With a focus on progressing further after returning to the UEFA Champions League and competing for top honors in the Premier League, Arsenal aims to build on their success.
Co-Chair Josh Kroenke praised Berta’s experience and track record, saying, “Andrea’s vast knowledge of the game, impressive record, and strong network make him a great addition to the club. We’re confident he will help us take the next step in our pursuit of major trophies.”
Before his success at Atlético Madrid, Berta worked at Italian clubs Carpenedolo, Parma, and Genoa, gaining a reputation for smart squad-building and strategic recruitment. Known for blending experienced players with emerging talent, he is expected to bring a structured approach to Arsenal’s player recruitment, contract negotiations, and overall strategy.
Berta’s appointment comes as Arsenal aims to strengthen their squad depth and long-term planning, with his first challenge being the development of the club’s summer transfer strategy for the 2025/26 season.
