Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has clarified why he rejected former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike as his running mate. Atiku stated that Wike was not suitable for a ticket aimed at promoting unity, instead of division.
In a statement released on Saturday by his media office, Atiku explained that he selected former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa due to his intellect, composure, and statesmanship. He emphasized that Okowa’s qualities made him the best choice for the vice-presidential candidate.
Atiku further clarified that a committee had recommended three potential candidates: Okowa, Wike, and ex-Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel. However, after careful consideration, he chose Okowa based on his merit.
In response, Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, dismissed Atiku’s comments, asserting that Wike had no regrets about losing the vice-presidential ticket to Okowa. Wike also claimed responsibility for contributing to Atiku’s defeat in 2023 and vowed to repeat this in 2027.
Atiku, however, criticized Wike, stating that leadership is not determined by numbers alone, but by character, dignity, and the ability to unite. He reminded Wike’s camp that leadership requires grace and humility, not just political popularity.
Atiku concluded by urging Wike to focus on Nigeria’s future and the well-being of its people instead of engaging in petty political bickering. He reiterated that his decision to choose Okowa as his running mate was strategic and aimed at unity, not division.
