The Body of Benchers has praised Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as one of its esteemed ambassadors. This recognition came during a visit to the minister’s office in Abuja on Friday, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, the chairman of the Body of Benchers.

Awomolo explained that the Body of Benchers is the highest legal body, consisting of distinguished professionals within the legal field. He highlighted that the body is responsible for formally calling individuals to the bar and also for disciplining erring lawyers.

“The Body of Benchers represents men and women of the highest distinction in our profession,” he said. “We are regarded as the soul that guides the legal profession and the administration of justice.”

During the visit, Awomolo expressed gratitude to Wike for his interventions in judicial matters, not just in the FCT but also in Rivers State during his time as governor. He commended Wike for his prompt actions in supporting the judiciary, particularly in areas where help was needed.

“I am honored to lead this delegation to thank you for being a faithful member of the Body of Benchers,” Awomolo stated. “You are a great representative of the legal profession in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. The president even praised you during a live interview on national television. Nothing can be better than that. Continue being a strong ambassador for us.”

Awomolo emphasized that the Body of Benchers, composed of the highest-ranking legal professionals, closely observes Wike’s actions, saying, “Whatever you do, we are watching. We’ll continue to express our gratitude for your commitment and loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He also commended Wike for the ongoing construction of comfortable housing for judicial officers, calling it a “responsive intervention” and noting that it supports the separation of powers among the branches of government. He dismissed concerns that the initiative might be seen as an attempt to influence the judiciary.

The visit was also an opportunity to update Wike on the activities of the Body of Benchers and to introduce Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the incoming chairman of the body and former Chief Justice of Nigeria. Awomolo requested continued support from the minister for the judicial branch.

In his response, Wike reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the judiciary’s development. He explained that the construction of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, the Annex Office Complex of the Body of Benchers, and the Judges’ Quarters were all approved by President Tinubu and passed by the National Assembly. He also mentioned that funds for the construction of staff quarters at the Nigerian Law School in Bwari and two hostels would be included in the 2025 budget.

Wike emphasized, “Without the approval of the budget, it would have been impossible for me to support the Body of Benchers and the judiciary. I will do whatever I can to support the profession I belong to, and I owe no one an apology for helping to enhance the performance of the judiciary.”

He concluded, “I will not miss any opportunity to contribute to the growth of the legal profession.”
