Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s health has taken a downturn following recent surgery, according to his medical team.
He is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) at DF Star Hospital in Brasília, where doctors report signs of “clinical deterioration.” In a statement shared Thursday on his official X account, his team said further medical tests are being carried out.
Key concerns include elevated blood pressure and worsening liver function, the doctors noted.
The surgery was related to ongoing intestinal issues that began after Bolsonaro was stabbed during a 2018 campaign rally. Since then, he has undergone multiple procedures, including the removal of a colostomy bag in 2019 and treatment for a blockage in 2022. He was also hospitalized in Florida in 2023 for abdominal pain.
His latest hospital stay came after he experienced severe abdominal pain during a public event in northeastern Brazil, just weeks before he is set to face trial.
In March, Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled that Bolsonaro must stand trial over allegations of attempting to overturn the 2022 election results, which he lost to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing.
Despite his condition, he shared a photo from his hospital bed on Tuesday, giving a thumbs-up and thanking the public for their prayers and support.
Doctors say he will continue with motor physiotherapy and preventive treatment to avoid blood clots.
