The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), comprising the 19 Northern States and the Abuja chapter, has joined Christians worldwide in mourning the death of His Holiness, Pope Francis.

In a statement issued by its chairman, Rev. John Hayab, the news of the Pope’s passing was described as a deeply sorrowful moment for Catholics and Christians everywhere, especially for the Roman Catholic community in Northern Nigeria and across the country.

Rev. Hayab emphasized that during times of loss, it is crucial for people of faith to unite in prayer and remembrance. He referred to Pope Francis as more than just a spiritual leader, calling him a beacon of hope, peace, and compassion in a divided world. According to Rev. Hayab, the Pope’s papacy was marked by significant spiritual progress, reforms, and a courageous approach to challenges.

From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis adopted a vision of the Church that was inclusive, merciful, and grounded in the teachings of Christ. Hayab highlighted the Pope’s rare combination of humility, intellect, and deep pastoral care. He stood for the poor, defended the environment, and consistently spoke out against injustice and inequality. Pope Francis also worked to bridge religious divides, promoting interfaith dialogue and confronting systems that oppressed or excluded others.

CAN acknowledged the Roman Catholic Church’s vital role in the spiritual and social life of many Nigerian communities. Pope Francis’s influence reached deeply into local parishes, missions, and schools, with his messages of service, dialogue, and living faith resonating far beyond the Vatican.

Rev. Hayab concluded that while this is a time of mourning, it is also an opportunity for reflection and celebration of Pope Francis’s life and legacy. The Christian community in Northern Nigeria and Catholics worldwide will forever remember him for his tireless efforts to foster unity among Christians and people of all faiths.
