Legendary coach Brad Gilbert, who has previously worked with tennis stars such as Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Andy Murray, has ended his partnership with Coco Gauff. Gilbert played a pivotal role in helping Gauff secure her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open.
According to the Daily Mail, the collaboration between Gauff and Gilbert began in July 2023, but on Wednesday, Gilbert announced on social media that they had mutually decided to part ways after a challenging few months for the 20-year-old.
“Thanks to Coco Gauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort,” Gilbert wrote. “Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead. I’m excited for the next chapter in my coaching career.”
Gauff also responded on X (formerly Twitter) later that day, writing, “Thank you (Brad)! We had an incredible run, and I wish you all the best in the future!”
Gauff’s attempt to defend her US Open title was cut short earlier this month when she was defeated in the fourth round by fellow American Emma Navarro. The No. 3 seed struggled with 19 double faults and only 14 winners in the three-set loss. Following the match, some fans called for Gauff to replace Gilbert. One fan even suggested that Nick Kyrgios should take over as her coach, to which the Australian replied, “I’d coach her.”
Navarro also eliminated Gauff in the fourth round of Wimbledon in July. After that loss, Gauff publicly expressed frustration with Gilbert and her team.
