A powerful rainstorm struck Itobe District in the Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday night, causing widespread devastation. The storm destroyed over 500 homes, leaving countless families without shelter.

Millions of naira in property damage occurred, including the destruction of schools, health centers, electric poles, churches, and mosques. Several residents were also injured in the disaster.

The Ejeh of Ofu, Akwu Obaje, expressed his shock and concern over the incident, calling for immediate assistance for the victims and describing the scale of damage as “heartbreaking.”

The traditional ruler spoke about the destruction across six villages—Itobe, Adumu, Oladebu, Ajegwu, and Itagidi—saying, “The scene is chaotic, with roofs torn off buildings, trees uprooted, and power lines down. The community is in desperate need of help, as many families have been left homeless.”

He further urged both the government and well-off individuals to provide urgent relief to the affected people. “Our hearts go out to the residents of Itobe District during this incredibly difficult time,” Obaje added.

The royal father also called on government bodies, corporate organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to respond promptly with assistance. “We implore the government and compassionate citizens to help restore hope to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods,” he reiterated.

The storm, which brought intense winds and torrential rain, has left the residents of Itobe District in dire need of shelter, food, and medical aid. The most vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, are especially at risk.

Victims of the disaster, including Mr. Atabo Okolo from Oladebu, Momoh Alifiya from Adumu, and Usman Gene from Itobe-Niniya, all called for immediate support.

“We urgently need help to rebuild our lives,” Okolo stated. “The destruction has made our already difficult economic situation even worse. We are now looking to both the state and federal governments for quick action.”

Gene echoed these sentiments, saying, “We are pleading with the government and relevant agencies to come together and support us, so that we can recover from this tragedy.”
