A security guard at Ebonyi State University’s Permanent Site in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area, identified as Ebube Igboke, has been beaten to death by his colleagues over allegations of theft. Igboke, a resident of Ezzama in Ezza South Local Government Area, was part of the Middle Pillar Security outfit employed by the university for security duties.

The incident was confirmed by the State Police Command spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. According to Ukandu, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the killing. He explained that the suspects claimed they had caught Igboke stealing at the university’s Permanent Site, and after detaining him, they reportedly took the law into their own hands by beating him. Although Igboke did not die immediately, the attackers later decided to take him to the police station, where officers advised them to seek medical treatment for him. It was at the hospital that his death was confirmed.

The deceased’s family has filed a petition with the State Police Commissioner, Adaku Uche-Anya, demanding justice. In the petition, signed by their lawyer, D. I. Njoku, the family alleges that Igboke was beaten to death and his body was taken to the state police headquarters by his attackers. The family also claims that when Igboke’s fiancée, who is also a member of the Middle Pillar Security outfit, was notified of the incident, she was prevented from taking him to the hospital. The family has called on the Commissioner of Police to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable.
