Federal Government Considering Funding for Murtala Muhammed Airport Refurbishment, Says Keyamo

FG considering sourcing for funds to refurbish Lagos airport - Keyamo

The federal government is exploring options to secure funding for the refurbishment of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, according to Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development. Keyamo addressed the media on Monday, March 3, to clarify reports that misrepresented his comments made during a stakeholders’ forum in Lagos on February 28.

A report had suggested that President Bola Tinubu was prioritizing sourcing funds for the airport’s redevelopment over the concessioning process. However, Keyamo clarified that while the government is indeed seeking funds for the airport’s refurbishment, the possibility of concessioning the airport remains an option.

In a post on X, Keyamo stated, “This headline is not a reflection of my speech at the Stakeholders’ forum held in Lagos last Friday. What I said is that the federal government is considering sourcing funds to totally refurbish the Lagos International Airport. The model of funding is yet to be finalized, but even if the Federal Government invests its own funds in rehabilitation, it does not stop the concessioning of the airport for proper running and management.”

Keyamo had previously mentioned on May 27, 2024, that the government was reviewing the airport concession process to ensure greater transparency and efficiency. He also emphasized that his ministry is working on a comprehensive master plan for the country’s major airports.
