Federal tertiary schools ordered to publish financial data by May 31

The federal government has instructed the management of all federal higher institutions in Nigeria to publish detailed financial and academic information on their websites by May 31, 2025. The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, in a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Boriowo Folasade.

The directive requires vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts to disclose their institutions’ annual budget, including personnel costs, overhead costs, and capital expenditures. Additionally, they must publish data on research grants received from foreign institutions, multilateral organizations, and development partners.

The institutions are also required to reveal the total value of their endowment fund as of the end of the previous year, with updates provided quarterly to maintain transparency and accuracy.

Alausa further instructed institutions to disclose their current student populations for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs to help assess enrolment size and academic capacity.

The ministry stressed that the information must be presented in a clear, accessible, and user-friendly format. Websites should be designed to allow easy access to this data for the public, including parents, students, and other stakeholders.

The ministry also emphasized that all federal institutions must comply fully with this directive, with periodic reviews of their websites to ensure compliance. Non-compliant institutions will face penalties. Alausa explained that this policy is part of a larger reform initiative aimed at building public trust, improving performance-based funding, and enhancing Nigeria’s global education rankings.
