Renewed cult clashes in the Alogi, Somorin, and Obantoko areas of Ogun State have resulted in the deaths of four individuals. According to Punch, the violence erupted on Saturday, March 15, with simultaneous attacks and reprisals between rival cult groups targeting their members.
Eyewitnesses reported that the conflict began when one cult group attacked and killed a member of another, prompting a retaliatory strike. While the exact number of casualties could not be immediately confirmed due to conflicting reports, sources stated that lives were lost during the clashes.
One eyewitness, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that four people were killed during the violence. The witness described the scene in the Aregbe area, where cultists went on a shooting spree, resulting in at least four deaths.
“At first, I thought cult violence was more prevalent in Lagos, but what I saw in Ogun State on Saturday completely changed my perception. It was unbelievable,” the eyewitness shared.
The source continued, recounting how they were near the Aregbe area, close to the state police headquarters, when they saw the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and his team responding to a distress call. Upon investigating, the witness discovered that the clashes involved members of the Aye and Eiye cult groups. Four cultists were reportedly killed in Somorin, Anobi, and Alogi under the Adatan Area Command.
However, another source familiar with the situation claimed only two people were killed. This source also noted that the violence, which occurred in multiple locations simultaneously, caused widespread panic among residents.
Details of the clashes revealed that the violence began in Somorin, Obantoko, when an Eiye cult member allegedly murdered Yusuf, a suspected Aye cult member. In retaliation, Aye members targeted and killed Sula, an Eiye cultist, at Alogi, Obantoko.
The two incidents took place almost simultaneously and caused significant fear among local residents.
Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the clashes, stating simply, “Yes, there was.”
