FUOYE Refutes Claims Of Negligence In Student’s Death

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has denied reports suggesting that Fejiro Sharon Oteri, a student who passed away on April 8, was not attended to at the university’s Health Centre due to its closure at night. The institution described the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement dated April 10, the Chief Medical Director of FUOYE’s Directorate of Health Services, Dr. Musibau Olawale, explained that Oteri, a student in the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, was brought into the clinic around 11:30 am after reportedly collapsing during academic activities.

“She was immediately treated as an emergency case by the doctor and medical team on duty. Despite showing no signs of respiration, pulse, or pupillary response on arrival, resuscitation efforts were promptly initiated,” Olawale said.

Following initial medical intervention, she was transferred in a university ambulance—accompanied by medical personnel—to a tertiary referral hospital for further care. Faculty members, including the HOD of her department, were present and monitored the situation.

Dr. Olawale confirmed there was a history of convulsions following her fall in the laboratory and noted she experienced a second convulsion en route to the clinic. He emphasized that the events occurred during the day and not at night, contrary to circulating rumors.

Addressing allegations that the university clinic does not operate at night, the CMD stated, “The university Health Centre has been operating 24-hour services—including weekends—since 2013, with a doctor, nurse, ambulance driver, and other health workers always on duty. These services continue even when students are not in session.”

He also cited the clinic’s medical records, night duty rosters, and testimonials from students, particularly those with chronic conditions, as evidence of its round-the-clock operations.

“We deeply regret the loss of Fejiro Sharon Oteri. Losing a young life is a tragedy, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones,” the university said.
