The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to immediately instruct internet service providers to block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content. This resolution followed a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All-Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina state.
In his motion, Tafoki highlighted the global rise of cyber pornography and expressed concern that Nigeria, being a religious country that prohibits nudity and pornography, has not taken sufficient action to tackle the issue. He pointed out that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already enacted laws to ban pornography.
The lawmaker also cited warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the harmful effects of pornography, which could lead to issues such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
After the motion was put to a voice vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas confirmed that the majority of lawmakers supported it. The House has now directed the NCC to impose penalties on internet service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
