Israeli PM Netanyahu Recovering After Successful Prostate Surgery

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in good condition and recovering after undergoing successful prostate removal surgery, his office announced late Sunday, December 29.

The procedure, conducted at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, was scheduled following the diagnosis of a urinary tract infection caused by a benign enlargement of the prostate. The surgical team, led by Prof. Ofer Gofrit, confirmed the operation “went as planned.” Netanyahu, 75, was under full anesthesia during the surgery and is now recovering in a secure underground ward.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin temporarily assumed the role of acting prime minister during the operation, while Defense Minister Israel Katz had authorization to convene the security cabinet if required.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office assured, “The surgery ended successfully without complications. The prime minister has woken up, is in good condition, and is completely conscious.”

Netanyahu will remain under observation for several days due to security concerns amid ongoing regional tensions, as Israel continues to face threats from militias in Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, Syria, and Gaza.

This marks another health challenge for Netanyahu, who has undergone several medical procedures in recent years, including hernia surgery in March, a pacemaker installation in 2023, and treatment for dehydration.

Meanwhile, his corruption trial, where he faces charges of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery, is scheduled to resume on January 6, 2025. His defense team has requested a postponement of hearings to allow for his recovery. Netanyahu has consistently denied the charges, describing them as part of a politically driven campaign against him.
