World number one Jannik Sinner has successfully defended his Australian Open title, defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets — 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 — at Melbourne Park.
The 23-year-old Italian secured his third Grand Slam victory, all on hard courts, following his breakthrough at the 2024 US Open. This win extends his incredible unbeaten streak to 21 matches.
Despite a strong effort from world number two Zverev, Sinner’s dominance was undeniable. He displayed remarkable agility, reached almost every ball, and stayed composed in key moments. Notably, Sinner didn’t face a single break point throughout the match.
Sinner started with a commanding first set, breaking Zverev in the eighth game to secure it in just 46 minutes. The second set saw more resistance from Zverev, but Sinner prevailed in a tiebreak before clinching the third set with an early break.
With this victory, Sinner becomes the first Italian to win three major titles, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli’s two French Open wins in 1959 and 1960.
For Zverev, the 27-year-old German and three-time Grand Slam finalist, the elusive major title remains out of reach. After falling short in the 2020 US Open and 2024 French Open finals, this loss adds another chapter to his quest for a breakthrough win.
Sinner now holds the distinction of winning three consecutive hard-court Grand Slams: the 2024 Australian Open, the 2024 US Open, and the 2025 Australian Open, further solidifying his status as a dominant force in men’s tennis.
