The lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Lawal Usman, has strongly condemned the killing of several travelers from Northern Nigeria in Uromi, Edo State.
Expressing deep distress over the brutal incident, Usman called on the Federal Government, the Edo State Government, and security agencies to conduct a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation into the crime and ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
In a statement released on Saturday in Kaduna, Usman condemned the senseless killing of innocent Northerners, calling it barbaric. He emphasized that the crime was not just an attack on innocent lives, but also a direct threat to Nigeria’s unity and peace.
“The victims were hardworking Nigerians simply trying to make a living, and their lives were tragically cut short in the prime of their existence—an unimaginable atrocity that demands urgent action,” Usman said. He stressed that no Nigerian, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or region, should ever face such senseless violence.
The lawmaker urged the Federal Government, Edo State Government, and security agencies to identify and punish those responsible for the killings. He also called on leaders at all levels of government, as well as community leaders, to focus on dialogue, reconciliation, and peace-building efforts to ease ethnic tensions and promote national unity.
Usman appealed to Northern leaders and Nigerians to remain calm and united in the pursuit of justice, stating, “We must resist any attempt to exploit this tragedy to create division or incite retaliation.” He reminded Nigerians that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity and must reaffirm its commitment to tolerance, respect, and the sanctity of human life.
Finally, Usman offered his condolences to the families of the murdered travelers, describing the loss as a “collective tragedy,” and prayed for the strength to cope with the irreplaceable loss. “To the grieving families, my heart is with you. We stand in solidarity with you during this painful time. Let us unite as one people to reject violence and work toward a Nigeria where justice, peace, and security prevail for all,” he concluded.
