Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has gifted N10 million to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session. Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate from the Faculty of Science, achieved an impressive CGPA of 4.93.

The announcement was made on Thursday during LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium in Ojo. The event also featured the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and Distinguished Professorships on prominent individuals, including the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), and former Lagos Deputy Governor, Otunba Olufemi Pedro.

Marwa, a former military administrator of Lagos, received a Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) in Infrastructure, Security, and National Development, while Pedro was awarded a Doctor of Business (Honoris Causa) in Banking, Entrepreneurship, and National Development.

Represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu underscored the value of education in societal development. “Education is the backbone of our society,” he said, adding that academic excellence should be celebrated just as achievements in entertainment, sports, and fashion are.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education infrastructure and student welfare through initiatives aligned with the THEMES+ agenda. Highlighting programs like Job Initiative Lagos, he stressed the goal of boosting the employability of final-year students.

LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, praised the state government’s “exceptional” support, revealing that 43 out of 44 courses offered at LASU were accredited during the 2023 accreditation exercise. She also announced the launch of new postgraduate programs at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education, which now includes international students.

In his remarks, LASU Chancellor Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN) urged graduates to be proud ambassadors of the university, encouraging them to remain innovative and committed to excellence.

This year, a total of 11,917 students graduated from LASU, including 971 Diploma holders, 8,711 undergraduates, 2,235 postgraduates, 302 with Postgraduate Diplomas, 1,132 with Academic Master’s degrees, 639 with Professional Master’s degrees, 125 PhD recipients, and 37 holders of Professional Doctoral Degrees.
