Lawyer Who Led Prosecution Against Trump Resigns and Flees US

Jack Smith, the special counsel who spearheaded the prosecution against United States President-elect Donald Trump, has resigned and fled the country just days ahead of Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

According to documents submitted to US District Judge Aileen Cannon, Smith completed his work and filed his final confidential report on January 7 before formally leaving the Department of Justice on January 10.

Smith was responsible for investigating two high-profile cases involving Trump: the alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office and the alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.

Appointed in November 2022, Smith, a former war crimes prosecutor, took charge of these investigations during a politically charged period. However, following Trump’s victory in the November 5 election, Smith dismissed the cases, citing a Justice Department rule prohibiting the prosecution of incumbent presidents.

In court filings requesting the dismissal of charges, Smith’s legal team acknowledged the strength of the cases but explained they could not be pursued due to Trump’s impending return to the presidency.

This development effectively ends all legal challenges against Trump, allowing him to assume office without facing prosecution.

Trump had previously vowed to dismiss Smith upon his return to power, creating an atmosphere of heightened political and legal tension.
