Melbourne Zoo community in mourning after death of gorilla Kimya

A female gorilla at Melbourne Zoo has died unexpectedly.

According to ABC News, Melbourne Zoo vets are investigating the death of a 20-year-old gorilla named Kimya, which has left the zoo community devastated. Veterinarians are working to determine the cause of death.

It says zoo staff are devastated by the death of the 20-year-old Western Lowland gorilla named Kimya.

The zoo said in a statement the Western Lowland gorilla’s death on Saturday morning was unexpected and its vets were “currently investigating the case”.

“As part of this investigation a full necropsy will be undertaken to determine the cause of death,” the zoo said.

Kimya first arrived at Melbourne Zoo from the Taronga Conservation Society in 2013 and quickly bonded with 24-year-old male, Otana.

They became a breeding pair following the birth of Kanzi, who was the first gorilla born at Melbourne Zoo in 15 years.

“Kimya was intelligent, observant and independent,” the zoo said.

“She was a loving mother, who gently showed Kanzi all the skills she needed as a gorilla.

“Melbourne Zoo members, visitors, volunteers, and staff — especially Kimya’s dedicated keeper team, many of whom have cared for her since her arrival — will deeply feel this loss.”

Melbourne Zoo director Sheri Horiszny said Kimya was a wonderful gorilla.

“We are all heartbroken,” she said.

“Our zoo family of staff, members and visitors have watched her over the years and joined in her delight of becoming a mother and raising Kanzi. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.”

The zoo said staff needed time to grieve.
