The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that the planned increase in electricity tariffs will raise Nigeria’s available power generation capacity to approximately 7,000 megawatts. This comes after the country achieved a record peak electricity generation of 5,801.84 MW last week.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu highlighted that regularizing electricity tariffs is essential to unlocking the sector’s full potential and improving both power generation and distribution.
“To sustain these improvements, the Government must address the N1.94 trillion tariff shortfall for 2024 and N2 trillion in legacy debts owed to the GENCOs. Continuing tariff reforms will ensure consumers pay for the energy they consume. By the time the tariffs are fully regularized, we will be closer to a 7,000 MW generation capacity. This will represent another significant step toward a stable, reliable, and efficient power sector for all Nigerians,” Adelabu stated.
The minister also confirmed that last week’s historic peak generation of 5,801.84 MW was followed by an impressive daily energy output of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours (MWh). He expressed excitement about the power sector’s progress and emphasized that these milestones are not just numbers but demonstrate tangible progress toward achieving uninterrupted power for businesses, households, and a growing economy.
Adelabu attributed the sector’s progress to the collaborative efforts of the Federal Ministry of Power, key stakeholders, and policy reforms aimed at optimizing Nigeria’s power infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of transmission and distribution networks and the adoption of innovative technologies.
He called for ongoing collaboration among state governments, the private sector, and the public to ensure the continued success and development of the power sector.
