Nigeria, Canada Sign Code-Sharing Agreement To Boost Aviation Efficiency

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Canadian government have signed a code-sharing agreement aimed at enhancing efficiency in the aviation sector. The announcement was made by Gbenga Saka, Special Adviser on digital media to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on his X page Friday.

Code-sharing allows two or more airlines to share flights and sell seats on each other’s planes, making it easier for passengers to book flights across multiple carriers. This new agreement will enable Nigerian and Canadian airlines to sell seats on each other’s flights, improving connectivity between the two nations.

At the signing ceremony, Keyamo expressed that the agreement marks a step forward in strengthening Nigeria-Canada relations. “Today, we advance our relationship one step further with this important agreement,” he said. “This agreement will allow designated airlines from both countries to collaborate and expand their services.”

Keyamo also revealed that some Nigerian operators have already been granted approval to operate on routes under this code-sharing initiative. He highlighted the broader goal of establishing a strong aeronautical relationship between the two countries.

Pasquale Salvaggio, the High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, emphasized the significance of the agreement in improving people-to-people connections and strengthening bilateral relations. He added, “Code-sharing enables a seamless journey for passengers by allowing airlines to sell tickets on flights operated by another airline, providing a smoother experience.”

The move follows discussions between Nigeria and Canada that began in July 2024, exploring the potential for direct flight connections and expanding business collaboration in the aviation industry.
