The Federal Government has congratulated South Africa on the 31st anniversary of its Freedom Day, celebrated on April 27.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, extended warm congratulations to South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.

Tuggar highlighted that Freedom Day commemorates the historic victory of democracy over apartheid and celebrates the resilience and unity that define South Africa’s journey. He also emphasized the deep bond between Nigeria and South Africa, forged through years of solidarity in the liberation struggle.

“As we reflect on this milestone, we recall Nigeria’s steadfast support for the anti-apartheid movement, offering diplomatic, material, and moral support in the fight for justice and Pan-Africanism,” Tuggar said.

He noted that both Nigeria and South Africa are among Africa’s largest economies and democracies, sharing a responsibility to promote peace, security, and inclusive development across the continent.

Looking to the future, Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with South Africa, particularly in areas such as trade, investment under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), cultural exchanges, and youth empowerment.

“We stand with South Africa in honoring the sacrifices of heroes like Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, and Thabo Mbeki, and reaffirm our commitment to realizing the vision of a prosperous, peaceful, and united Africa,” he added.
