The Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi ENSE, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support in the successful completion of Nigeria’s first Hybrid Electric Vehicle Charging Station, located in Abuja.
Speaking at the grand commissioning ceremony on March 20, 2025, Dr. Abdullahi emphasized the project’s significance in advancing clean energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels in Nigeria’s transport sector.
The 5.5-kilowatt solar-powered charging station operates using both solar photovoltaic (PV) energy and the public power grid, ensuring fast charging and sustainability. It is equipped with a 10-kilowatt lithium battery and an 8kVA intelligent inverter, allowing it to charge four vehicles simultaneously in just 30 minutes.
“This project aligns with President Tinubu’s climate change agenda and Nigeria’s transition towards a low-carbon economy,” Dr. Abdullahi stated. He also acknowledged the Electric Motor Vehicle Company (EMVC), Nigeria’s first EV company, for its technical partnership in bringing the project to life.
The Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, hailed the initiative as a landmark step in Nigeria’s transition to green mobility. “This achievement reflects our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and promoting technological innovation,” Nnaji said.
He further urged for the nationwide expansion of electric mobility infrastructure, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to driving sustainable energy policies, attracting investments, and creating green jobs in Nigeria.
