Nigerian Boxer Segun Olanrewaju Dies After Collapsing In The Ring In Ghana

Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, a 40-year-old Nigerian boxer, tragically passed away after collapsing during a boxing match in Ghana. The former National and West African light-heavyweight champion was facing Accra’s John Mbanugu, also known as “Power,” in an undercard bout at Ghana’s Professional Boxing League event at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

Mid-fight, Olanrewaju suddenly dropped to the canvas, prompting the referee to call for immediate medical assistance. Despite the efforts of medical professionals to revive him, the boxer was sadly pronounced dead. Early reports suggest he may have suffered a cardiac arrest.

The boxing world is in mourning after the unexpected loss of Olanrewaju, a well-respected figure in Nigerian boxing. He held both National and West African light-heavyweight titles and had an impressive career. Born in Lagos, Olanrewaju competed in 23 professional bouts, securing 13 wins—12 by knockout—while suffering eight losses and recording two draws. In recent years, however, his career had faced challenges, with four consecutive defeats leading up to his tragic passing. His most recent fight was on December 24, 2024, where he was defeated by Idowu Raheed at the Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos.
